3 Ways to Grow Your Entrepreneur RV Business

You know who you are…a creative, freelancing, RV traveling entrepreneur, – or you are about to join the ranks.  Our uniform changes, not just daily but hourly.  One minute we are an RV repair person, the next we are a marketing guru.  What should be at the top of our list as a self-employed RVer and how do we make that a success?

How to Grow Your RV Entrepreneur Business

1. Determine What YOU Need to Be Self-Employed

Being self-employed is not about doing what everyone else is doing or making what someone else says you need to make for a product or income.  You need to take a step back and evaluate what you need to be self-employed.  That might mean the income you need to stay in your rig, it might be about being able to use your creative skills, or it might be about the ability to connect with other RVers.
You didn’t know you were going to get an assignment!  Follow these steps to get a quick view of what you might need to be a self-employed RVer.

  • Make a list of 10 things you believe self-employment can provide to you.
  • Add five kinds of work you could do or are doing to the list.
  • Prioritize the list starting most important to least important.
  • Be honest and underline anything on your list that are things you really don’t care to do.

Notice on the last item, I didn’t say eliminate them – these are just items you may need to find support or assistance for or outsource.

When you are working at integrating all the segments of your RV life, don’t forget the way that makes you the MOST successful – Enjoying what you do.  People may think this is cliché but as a serial entrepreneur, I can promise, looking back that all the businesses I have worked on, there is a clear answer – it is what you enjoy doing most that lasts and the rewards are greater.

2. Evaluate New Ways to Be Self-Employed

Have you ever been on an RV trip or a Sunday drive and then the next moment you are stuck in a rut and can’t back out, much less moving forward?  You should evaluate whether your current or considered self-employment will wind up the same way – stuck in a rut.  We are fortunate there are so many ways to be self-employed while on the move than just five years ago.  Technology has been a gift to RVers who want to get on the road now and not wait until retirement.

  • If you type in freelance or remote into any job search, the list of opportunities is almost endless.  Search now and get an idea of what direction you would like to go or a future you can move into.
  • Online Retail.  Are you creative or technical?  Start your own store – online.  Sell your own crafts, re-sell used items or be a third-party seller or a combination (like custom t-shirts!).
  • Maybe you don’t need cash flow, but you need access to items to help your RV lifestyle along?  Try setting up an exchange with other RVers or populace in general.  You can actively do this through social media, online marketplaces and more.
  • This works two ways…maybe you have a skill you can provide via an app or online meetings.  Or you might need to up your business game by learning a new skill or subject.
  • Reach out to your old boss or related industry and contract out your services for set rates and set periods of time.

3. Build Community

The adage – “It’s not what you know, it’s who you know…”, will always be a valid point.  No matter how developed your skill, even if you are the best of the best, you will sit there on that island without a customer or client or vendor in sight.  If you want to be successful, you must make sure you are not stranded without community and connections.  Here are some that have been very helpful:

  • Xscapers.  If you have not embedded yourself in this community, you need to get started right now.  Xscapers is all about working from the road and helping RVers pursue this dream.  And they connect you with a group of like-minded entrepreneurs.
  • Cross-Industry.  Don’t just build connections in your industry.  Consider related ones.  For example, if you are focusing on the RV industry – also try travel, transportation, or tourism connections.  This not only helps you have a greater reach, but it also creates opportunities for you to learn about other events and generate new ideas.
  • Share Connections.  Take the time to learn what others are doing around you.  Find ways to share what they are doing with other entrepreneurs.  The more you help connect others, the more connections you can make as well.
  • Joint Ventures.  Lift other RV business owners up with you.  When you get opportunities for your business to make sales or grow, look for ways to bring in other entrepreneurs.  Add their skill sets to a project.  They will remember who helped them get there and will hopefully do the same for you.  Bonus:  The recipient of your work will remember you as a valued resource.

Wrapping Up

I hope you enjoy being a self-employed RVer too.  The greatest thing about being self-employed in an RV is you can enjoy seeing the world around you, relax, take a breath, and go at it again…and really make a difference, for your community, your business and yourself.
